Requirements: .PDF reader, 9 mb
Overview: You will focus on Italy and the way in which a limited liberal democracy faced serious challenges which eventually destroyed it. First, you will consider the nature of Italian society, economy and the political system that had emerged from unification in the middle years of the nineteenth century. How far could Italy be considered one of the great powers of Europe? Second, you will consider the immediate impact of the First World War in the years 1915-18 and the post-war crisis that emerged between 1918 and 1922. Third, you will examine the nature of the Fascist regime that came to power in 1922 and evolved into a dictatorship in the later 1920s. How did it achieve this and how did it seek to hold on to power and transform Italy? Finally, you will study Mussolini’s attempt to make Italy a truly great power in Europe and try to assess how far he had succeeded in the 1930s and why and how disaster struck in the early 1940s.
