Overview: From page one, The Taste of Ashes went smoothly and quickly. I was as delighted to get back to Pine as he was to be back. The first chapter, in which he meets Debroah Ellen Thronetree, age seven, seemed the best piece of writing I was capable of. As for Pine, I felt he came off throughout as a more believable, better developed character than in any of the earlier books.
Then, two hundred pages into it, I lost the manuscript. And with no carbon to back me up.
Fortunately, the loss lasted only three hours. Turned out I’d left my briefcase in the overhead rack on a suburban train, the conductor found it at the end of the run and handed it over to the station master. But those three hours must have taken five years off my life.
