1. Arranged – A puppet ruler
When I was very little, my parents were murdered in front of my older-by-five-minutes twin and I. Then Callista was taken away, and I was made queen by those who wanted the power for themselves. The throne was not mine. Unless Callista was dead.
Callista is back, now known as Jillian and mated to three shifters who have her back in all things. And those who had killed my parents and left my sister to die in the forest have been punished by the high council. Once the elation of realizing my sister was alive washed over me, I was ready to pluck the crown from my head and hand it over to the true queen. Free myself of a future in this palace, where even those who had the kingdom’s best interests at heart would be constantly watching me. I could walk away and never look back.
But my sister did not want the crown. She has returned to her happy life in her little home in the forest far away, with her loving mates, and her new pack. She abdicated. I couldn’t blame her. I would have done the same, had the high council allowed it.
They have put her advisers in place, men and women who want me to be the perfect queen, to look a certain way, to act a certain way and although they say it doesn’t matter that I am almost completely deaf, I fear some among my subject may not agree. Like those who killed my parents, their prejudice comes through clear. Jillian, my sister, cannot speak. It’s quite a twist that her twin cannot hear.
As a puppet queen I was prevented from taking a harem, but now that it’s official, I’m screwed, and not in the good way. Royalty rarely gets to choose their own mates, and there are contracts in place that must be fulfilled.
I never wanted any of this. Not the crown, not my arranged harem, and certainly not this constricting dress.
Maybe I can escape like Jillian did.
Or maybe I’m just in a pit of quicksand fate and destined to drown.
2. Determined – I have three betrothed mates? You’ve got to be kidding me.
There’s enough to do with upheaving our kingdom out of the ice age and into the modern world as well as undoing the harm done to the people who live here without adding romance to it, but that’s my life. With my crown comes three men who all have some kind of claim on me, and they have the contracts to prove it. Contracts written when I was a newborn baby, too little to be consulted on my desires for my future.
The thing is. Each one is irresistible in their own way. It might not be so bad.
For years, after my parents’ murder and my sister’s disappearance, I lived in a tower, a mere child with a crown. A pawn called a queen, subject to the regency of the one who caused all my pain. And who was proceeding to strip my subjects and the very land of everything valuable while pretending to be my loving guardian. With Uncle Bors finally removed, I’m up to my eyeballs in kingdom business. Old laws, new troubles, and the ghost of my uncle are all occupying space in my head?
Can’t a queen get a moment’s peace?
3. Fated – I will need an iron fist to defeat my uncle.
But so many things have changed. Since the evil regent was deposed and imprisoned, my kingdom has begun to thrive. From a backward poverty-stricken wasteland is emerging a strong, vibrant population moving into the twenty-first century.
My three mates and I are also growing together into a solid rulership, learning from one another as we throw our combined skills and gifts into our lives and those of all my subjects. We work hard, we play hard, and as for the nights…I did mention three mates?
Sounds amazing, doesn’t it? But when is life perfect?. The evil regent, my Uncle Bors has escaped from the High Council’s prison and is trying to amass an army to kill me and retake control of the kingdom, which he will go right back to pillaging for its every asset. And my hearing has gone from slow deterioration, due to a genetic condition rare among shifters but apparently active in my line, to the final stages. I’ve always known it would, that one day all the sounds would be gone, but having it right in front of me is so much harder than I ever dreamed.
