The Great Victorian Collection by Brian Moore

Overview: An obscure young historian checks into a motel in Carmel, California, goes to sleep, dreams, and awakens to find, laid out like an open-air market outside his window, an enormous display of Victorian artifacts—furniture, paintings, jewelry, scientific and musical instruments, toys, tapestries, sculpture, silver, clothing, and secret rooms containing erotic books, pictures, and implements. Anthony Maloney has literally dreamed up all this, brought into being a unique (or is it duplicate?) aggregate of objets d’art, and, like an artist, begins to cope with the worldly implications of the creative act.
Opening with this fantastic premise, Brian Moore proceeds with a meticulously realistic narrative. Skeptical at first, the world comes to Maloney’s door—in the shape of the news media, psychological and parapsychological investigators, antiquaries, and agents and exploiters. His estranged wife finally breaks with him, his mother attempts to steer him back into normal life. Two young people—an emigre German newsman and his girl, Mary Ann McKelvey—bring into Maloney’s existence a sinister sycophancy and a sexual passion that remarkably blends the contemporary open erotic style with the secretive, charged sexuality of the Victorians.
As Maloney’s dream begins to fade—again, literally—he himself shows signs of breakdown, and the novel moves through horrifying, sleepless nights on the Sunset Strip to a frenzied transcontinental dash. Maloney’s obsessive dream has thrown him into an insoluble dilemma from which at last he finds release.
For his tenth novel, Brian Moore has devised a fiction that functions equally well as an evocation of the vanished Victorian world, as a narrative with elements of the surreal and the occult, as a love story, as a satirical view of the artist brought to bay by middlemen, and of course as an entertainment of the highest order.
