Overview: Available at last, this is the 1923 historical novel book Georgette Heyer suppressed all her life. Set during the English Restoration, The Great Roxhythe is a story of courtly love and political intrigue in the reign of Charles II (1660–1685). Its all-knowing protagonist, the Marquis of Roxhythe, is in many ways a forerunner of Justin Alastair, Duke of Avon from Heyer’s later “These Old Shades” and “Devil’s Cub”; he also has traits of Orczy’s Scarlet Pimpernel.

This is a deeply-researched book, with Heyer’s detailed understanding of the nature and personality of King Charles II and the Prince of Orange, their courts, the intricacies of the Succession, the religious issues of the day, and the ramifications of the English Civil Wars (1642–8).

The Great Roxhythe is the only novel in the Heyer canon that does not have a significant male-female relationship at its center. The Marquis of Roxhythe cares for no one but his King, Charles II, while Roxhythe’s young secretary, Christopher Dart, is passionately devoted to his master. One of the turning points of the novel is Christopher’s devastating discovery that Roxhythe has deceived him. When the book first appeared, this triangular relationship and the male focus of the book elicited no particular comment or criticism. (In fact, the reviewer for The Times Literary Supplement complimented the author on her “neat dialogue.”) By 1951, however, when the book was reprinted for the last time (against the vehement wishes of its author), it acquired a following of readers who saw it as Heyer’s Great Gay Novel, a reading her family and editors say was entirely unintended.
