The Divine Wind: Japan’s Suicide Squadrons in WWII The Story of the Kamikaze Pilots by Rikihei Inoguchi, Tadashi Nakajima, Roger Pineau
Requirements: EPUB, MOBI Reader, 16 MB
Overview: Written by one of the individuals in on the ground floor of the organizing of the kamikaze to help defend the Philippines. Tells of Admiral Onishi’s struggle to start suicide attacks. His superiors originally refused to allow them. Many times if a plane or pilot was to badly damaged or injured the choice could be made on the spot to try to crash dive a target. But seldom ordered. As pilot losses increased & skill levels went down the chances of Japanese aviators to survive their missions plumeted. There was beginning to be talk of adopting crash dive tactics among pilots, aircrew, & middle & lower ranking officers of the Imperial Army & Navy. Admiral Onishi was ordered to support the navy’s attempt to attack the US fleets at Leyte Gulf. He had fewer than 100 planes to do so. So he was set on his path. He ordered the 201st air group to seek volunteers for attack groups( at this time the navy pilots were volunteers, not always so later on), & they all volunteered. Though Lt. Yukio Seki appears to not have been such a rousing volunteer. He said he was going to protect his wife. Not for the Emperor. He is also reported to have said Japan must be in bad shape if it has to kill a good pilot like me. The book then proceeds thru the first missions, the learning process for the attacks,( it even has drawings to show the different approaches & attack methods they developed & used), gives some of the names of pilots who flew the missions & who some of the other key figures on the ground were. Follows the missions thru the Philippines, to Formosa(Taiwan), & eventually Japan itself. It is a very good book. Goes great with The Divine Wind, Blossoms in the Wind human legacy of the kamikaze,The Kamikazes by Edwin P. Hoyt, & The Sacred Warriors Japans suicide legions. Highly recommended!
