Overview: The magazine that has done the most to shape modern science fiction is Astounding Science Fiction, now retitled Analog Science Fiction—Science Fact. Founded in 1929 and first published in January, 1930 as Astounding Stories, it began maturing under the editorship of Harry Bates and moved into its unique position as leader of the field in 1937, when John W. Campbell became editor. For over thirty years his magazine has personified the best in science fiction.
Harry Harrison and Brian W. Aldiss, editors of this anthology, are well-known on both sides of the Atlantic. Not only are they prize-winning authors in their own right; they are also critics and have collaborated successfully on other anthologies including the year’s best science fiction series and Farewell Fantastic Venus.
