#1 – Merry Little Mystic Murder
Hard. Trust me on that.

Still, this was my favorite part, despite the subject and content, the endless chatter around me trying to pull my focus, scent of pumpkin spice and pine dominating the air thanks to the real, live Christmas tree someone donated to the police department. Maybe that meant something about me, how enjoying the process of uncovering things people thought hidden through the power inside brought me joy and peace, far more than carols or the holiday season or eggnog lattes.

And maybe it just meant I was good at what I did.

I tried not to think about it.

Phoebe Monday’s unusual birth into a triunity of wonderworkers always left her feeling a bit like an outsider. At least the power she (sort of!) controls makes working as a sketch artist for the police department the perfect fit. Still, diving into memories of victims while altering the luck of those around her seems trivial in comparison to what her Maiden, Mother and Crone family are capable of.

But when homeless victims come under attack and a normal human’s murder puts the Monday magic at risk, it’s up to Phoebe and her odd talents to save the day.

#2 – Death Warmed Over
Would using magic to entice my client to tell me what she wanted make me a bad person? Because, after my third visit to her rather ostentatious mansion on the edge of town, sketching seemingly endless variations of poses I could have easily done from photos instead of live sittings, I was ready to tell her I was donezo.

Charlotte Easton didn’t seem to notice my growing irritation at yet another wasted two hours watching her fiddle and fidget in the dark blue gown she chose (from a long line of clothing already worn and then discarded), substantial bosom on the verge of bursting from the low-cut satin making me wince as she shifted yet again on the crushed velvet daybed she’d decided (after many other locations had been sampled and rejected) was today’s selection for my fresh torment.

Listen. I’m a patient person for the most part. But sheesh already.

Phoebe Monday’s portrait commission turns to murder when her client’s father turns up dead. The problem with that scenario? He’s been six feet under for over a year already and not even her magic can figure out what made him rise from the grave…

#3 – Drawn to Death
The edge of the heavy metal frame warmed in the palms of my hands as I supported my end, my best friend and fellow artist, Pickle Pickford, grunting as he lifted the opposite side free from the bed of the jacked-up black truck parked at the rear of the gallery.

"Careful, please." I’d only rarely seen my other friend, Dark Mood, in any state of agitation, their typically calm and quiet nature one of the things I adored about them. So, to witness their anxious concern over the massive painting Pickle and I eased out of the truck bed, their icy blue eyes wide and shining white in contrast to the black liner, mascara and shadow creating an almost bulging effect, their pale cheeks ashen under the layers of ivory powder, full lips pulled into a black slash of a line over a grimace of worry that had me actually near giggles at Dark’s obvious nervousness.

I didn’t find their discomfort amusing, I promise. It was more so the fact the normally stoic and withdrawn, if always kind and caring, artist and owner of the warehouse collective where I lived and painted was showing, for the first time since I’d met them, actual nerves.

When Phoebe’s friend, Dark Mood, is invited to show at a prestigious gallery, she happily assists with a bit of good luck to ensure her anxious companion succeeds. The only trouble is, Phoebe’s resulting bad luck leads her to uncover yet another dead body and puts her front and center in the murder investigation. All while juggling her uncomfortable relationship with Officer Cooper Hudson and the odd darkness lingering around the gallery’s owner Phoebe can’t seem to identify…

#4 – Remains to Be Seen
All In The Family

My grandmother’s door shouldn’t have felt like I faced a firing squad instead of the rather rude naked man dangling in the center of the black-painted space, urging me to use his impressive and repulsive self to announce my presence with a wriggle of his bronze hips. Why then was I so nervous I hesitated a long moment, hand half-raised, power contained, shuffling my feet on the hardwood floor in front of her suite while debating this idea? Why does life have to be so complicated? Phoebe’s choice to move out of her family’s home and find her own way outside the triunity of the Maiden/Mother/Crone collective was meant to be a good thing. Instead, she’s juggling an unhappy grandmother and an uncomfortable relationship with Officer Cooper Hudson, all while doing her best to support herself with her art, not the family fortune. But when Phoebe’s bestie, Mirabelle, finds herself on the brink of job loss and a murder indictment, her own troubles will have to wait. It’s up to the newly independent Monday to find out who the real killer is before her friend falls victim herself.
