Mithras-Orion: Greek Hero and Roman Army God by Michael P. Speidel
Requirements: .PDF reader, 16 Mb
Overview: The author of this ingenious memory is that the Greek myth of Orion is at the very basis of Roman Mithriacism. Part of an astronomical interpretation of bullfighting. The elements of this cult imagery correspond to the series of the main constellations which were along the equator around 100 BC, between Taurus and Scorpio: Orion (= Mithra), the Little Dog, the Hydra (= the serpent), the Crater (under the Lion), the Raven, the Spur (of the Virgin) … Orion with the right arm oriented to the north and the left arm to the south. Or Porphyry tells us that Mithras has north to the right and south to the left!

But why identify Orion with Mithras? Would you like to post a so the Greek hero with the god irania? It is a hunter, enemy of the scorpion (like Mithras). Son of Gê (like the giants), he is a solar hero in the sense that he regains his sight in front of the rising sun. Certainly. Corn Gê is not the stone: Mithra is “petrogenic”, and not son of the Earth. He is not a victim of the scorpion, like Orion whose constellation sinks under the horizon, when that of his murderer rises!
