Overview: Despite a daily diet of increasing crime statistics, the fictional menu of murder, mayhem and mystery continues to appeal to an ever-widening audience. This is not the place to examine the reasons behind such a phenomenon, indeed the crime fiction addict would probably prefer not to know the result of such a study, but the fact remains that readers thoroughly enjoy the challenge of a genuine puzzle, be it physical or psychological. So it is particularly pleasing to publish an anthology which so perfectly upholds these precepts.
The short story is the most demanding vehicle for a writer to use to satisfy the reader, yet all the contributors to Midwinter Mysteries 4 have amply displayed their skills in labyrinthine plotting and surprise denouements. Together they have created a volume full of twists and turns and intellectual teases. I would like to thank them all for their individual stories and for collectively giving me so much pleasure in bringing them together.
