Digital Wasteland by J. D. Jorissen

Overview: Will Anders may have been born in 2025, but his eccentric grandfather raised him like he was born in 1981, which is just one of the reasons Will never seemed to fit in with other kids his age. Not that he was entirely alone. Will may not have had friends growing up, but he could always find solace in the post-apocalyptic landscapes found in the books, movies, and television of his grandfather’s generation.
When he isn’t spending his school days dreaming about the end of the world, Will splits his time between a dead-end job at the DroneShop and surviving life in the crime-ridden Chicago housing project known as, the Parks. The ever-present prospect of a painful death at the hands of drugged-out miscreants keeps Will indoors, confined to his prison-cell-sized unit, warding off bouts of depression by immersing himself in the world of OMEGA – the ultra-popular post-apocalyptic virtual reality videogame. Will has spent countless hours playing the game, finding the familiar post-apocalyptic wasteland a welcome reprieve from an otherwise dull and meaningless existence.
So, when Will discovers he’s been selected to alpha test the sequel to OMEGA using a brand new state-of-the-art virtual reality rig, he’s thrilled! But Will’s about to discover the apocalypse isn’t all it’s cooked up to be.
