Overview: ‘Claw of the Conciliator’ is the second book in Gene Wolfe’s ‘Book of the New Sun’. This book, somewhat confusingly, does not pick up where ‘The Shadow of the Torturer’ leaves off, which is somewhat surprising since the end of the first book was kind of a cliffhanger. We never do find out (at least in this book) what happened at the end of first book.

Overview: Wolfe plays with the nature of his world and the identity of its characters–all of whom come to life under his masterful skill–and takes the traditional quest of the hero who will become himself off into previously uncharted directions. Many will find Wolfe to be dense and perhaps confusing, but a careful read of the text is both entrancing and rewarding. This book and the series that follows are a fine treat and should be sought by all lovers of fine speculative fiction.

Thought-provoking as well as entertaining, it further demonstrates the strength of Bear’s storytelling.
