1. The Ghost Rock Cafe (2011)
An old hermit has been killed in Utah’s wildlands, and Sheriff Bud Shumway knows it’s murder, even though some say it was a cougar kill. Others think it was done by a Bigfoot who has roamed the area for years, killing cattle and leaving people so traumatized that they never want to go into the wilderness again. But Sheriff Shumway can’t afford to believe in Bigfoot, given the huge area he’s responsible for, most of it wildlands.
Set at the Ghost Rock Cafe, high on the wild and mysterious San Rafael Swell, this mystery will have you laughing, scared to death, and wondering if Bigfoot might really exist. In any case, you’ll find out who really killed the hermit of Swasey’s Cabin, and it may not be who you think.

2. The Slickrock Cafe (2011)
The crusty owner of a local rock shop has been killed in Utah’s wildlands, and ex-sheriff Bud Shumway has been asked to return to his hometown to solve the crime. He reluctantly agrees, never suspecting the case involves an old childhood friend and a pair of mysterious Incan skeletons known as the Malachites. Set at the Slickrock Cafe, deep in the sandstone fins and domes of southeast Utah, this mystery will have you laughing, scared to death, and wondering when the mysterious Black Beast will strike again. Add in a motorcycle gang, Bud’s bumbling deputy Howie, a deputy sheriff who writes mysteries, a cantankerous rancher, and a cryptic Peruvian with his llamas, and there’s never a dull moment. In any case, you’ll find out who the Malachites really are, and they’re sure not a tribe in the Old Testament.
(Each book is a stand-alone read with the same main characters.)

3. The Paradox Cafe (2012)
Rancher Mack Murphy has been buying up land in southwest Colorado, threatening those who won’t sell, including Junior, the uncle of ex-sheriff Bud Shumway. Bud agrees to visit his uncle to help defuse things, never suspecting he would get caught right smack in the middle of Mack’s murder. And it becomes the toughest case Bud’s ever had to solve, as almost everyone is a suspect. Set in the Paradox Valley, a beautiful and remote area with a wooly Wild West history, this mystery will have you laughing, scared to death, and wondering when the mysterious Wild Man will strike again. Add in some fake Ute Indian burials, a new-age addiction counsellor, Bud’s bumbling deputy Howie, a wealthy restauranteer with a penchant for railroads, Mack’s missing wife, Junior’s longing to return to his hobo ways, and two young gold prospectors who are always just one step ahead of the law, and there’s never a dull moment.

4. The No Delay Cafe (2013)
An old rock hound has been killed in Utah’s wildlands, and ex-sheriff Bud Shumway knows it has something to do with black-market dinosaur bone thieves, even though his bumbling replacement, Sheriff Howie, thinks it has something to do with aliens. And after receiving a mysterious envelope containing a weird claw and a set of coordinates written on roll-your-own cigarette paper, Howie is determined to prove himself a capable sheriff, especially since he’s been accused of having a million-dollar voice and a ten-cent brain.
Set at the No Delay Cafe, near the wild and mysterious badlands of Green River, Utah, this mystery will have you laughing, scared to death, and wondering if aliens might really exist. Add in a whacky UFO sect, the cafe owner’s missing wife, a cantankerous and suspicious pilot, and a burned-out mechanic who takes his dogs four-wheeling in a Crown Victoria, and there’s never a dull moment.
In any case, you’ll find out who really killed the old rock hound, and it may not be who you think.

5. The Silver Spur Cafe (2014)
The self-centered director of a small Shakespearean troupe has been killed on the flanks of a remote Utah bluff, and ex-sheriff Bud Shumway knows it has something to do with someone in the Witness Protection Program, even though his bumbling replacement, Sheriff Howie, suspects a mysterious prospector who has just arrived from the Superstition Mountains.
Set at the Silver Spur Cafe in a nearly-abandoned railroad town in southeast Utah, this mystery will have you laughing, scared to death, and wondering when Shakespeare’s going to roll over in his grave. Add in a whacky bunch of hippie kids in an old converted school bus, a suspicious waitress, an invasion of old Rolls Royces, a group of superstitious actors, and the local Liar’s Club, and you’ll soon see why there’s bound to be foul play at the Silver Spur Cafe.
In any case, you’ll find out who really killed the director, and it may not be who you think. And you’ll also find that to shoot or not to shoot, that is the question.

6. The Ice House Cafe (2014)
When ex-sheriff Bud Shumway and his wife, Wilma Jean, decide to vacation in a scenic Colorado town near Aspen, they never guess they’ll soon be immersed in solving the murder of a famous country-western singer. And even though Bud’s bumbling replacement, Sheriff Howie, is far away over in the small town of Green River, Utah, he still manages to play havoc with everyone’s peace of mind when his sheriff’s vehicle is stolen and he finds out he’s on the wanted list of Utah’s FBI.
Set in the historic Ice House Cafe in the village of Redstone, also known as the Ruby of the Rockies, this mystery will have you mystified and on edge as you follow Bud through the mysterious shadows of the Redstone Castle, dodging ghosts, half-wild hound dogs, bears, an eccentric waitress, and a suspicious silver miner, all while rubbing shoulders with the rich and famous, as he tries to figure out why everyone thinks Wilma Jean’s a zombie.
Add a sinister ice-cream truck, a cryptic diary, man-eating quicksand, enigmatic infrasound, and a giant marble icicle, as well as Bud’s skill at lock picking, and you’ll soon see why Bud wishes he’d never seen the town of Redstone, much less the Ice House Cafe.
In any case, you’ll find out who really killed the famous singer, Calico Callie, and it may not be who you think.

7. The Rattlesnake Cafe (2016)
When ex-sheriff and watermelon farmer Bud Shumway agrees to help out his friend, Sheriff Hum Stocks, as a deputy for the winter, he never guesses he’ll soon be deep in the rugged and wild Dolores Triangle, trying to solve not only the mystery of a skeleton wearing knee boots, but also the murder of rattlesnake-hunter and wannabe rodeo clown, Chicken Bottoms.
Set in the Dolores Triangle, that area defined by the Colorado-Utah border and the Colorado and Dolores rivers, this mystery will have you mystified and on edge as you follow Bud as he dodges invisible black-ops choppers and deals with friendly bullsnakes, dangerous rattlesnakes, a retired game-show host, rivers that rise without warning, a mule named Otis, a secretive Air Force officer who’s a possible imposter, and a young filmmaker making a documentary about his rocketeer friend.
All this, along with learning to ballroom dance, a skeleton that disappears into thin air, and a body wearing Hello Kitty slippers, and you’ll soon see why Bud wishes he’d never set foot in the Rattlesnake Cafe on the mysterious Dolores Triangle.
And of course, back home in Green River, Bud’s bumbling replacement, Sheriff Howie, is never far away, as long as he has a phone and can call for advice on everything from dealing with train wrecks to his first police sting in the nearby state park campground.
In any case, you’ll find out who really killed Chicken Bottoms, and it may not be who you think.

8. The Beartooth Cafe (2016)
When ex-sheriff and watermelon farmer Bud Shumway and his wife, Wilma Jean, head to Montana to pursue Bud’s dream of learning to fly-fish, Bud never guesses he’ll soon be deeply involved in trying to solve the mystery of a missing lunch lady he’s never met, as well as trying to stay off the radar of a strange religious cult that believes in immortality while plotting to kill people.
Set in the magnificent Absaroka Mountains near Yellowstone National Park, this mystery will have you mystified and on edge as you follow Bud as he witnesses a grizzly bear resurrection, meets a young investigative reporter with a knack for following the wrong person, and dodges a shady John Deere salesman and a religious guru, who Bud knows are up to no good.
All this, along with a combine demolition derby, meeting a Crow medicine woman with a cryptic message, losing his two beloved dogs, finding a fish made of stone, exploring old underground Prohibition tunnels, wrecking model railroads, and worrying about the Yellowstone supervolcano exploding, and you’ll soon see why Bud wishes he’d never set foot in the Beartooth Cafe.
And of course, back home in Green River, Sheriff Howie tries to mediate ongoing feuds between Old Man Green and Junkyard Goldie, hoping Bud can keep them from killing each other, even though he’s a thousand miles away.
In any case, you’ll find out what really happened to the lunch lady, and it might not be what you think.

9. The Melon Rind Cafe (2018)
When ex-sheriff and watermelon farmer Bud Shumway learns that his wife, Wilma Jean, wants to sell her cafe and become a backcountry pilot, he senses that his world is about to change, and not necessarily in a good way. But Bud never guesses that he’ll soon be deeply involved in trying to solve the mysterious death of a crusty old Scotsman who, as he was dying, told Bud that his killer was a witch’s tongue. Bud soon becomes an unwilling witness to the frenzy surrounding the hunt for the old man’s hidden treasure, and it soon appears that Sheriff Howie is also getting involved.
Set in the deep canyons of southeast Utah, follow along as Bud tries to figure out a cryptic map centered around a tumbleweed, as well as trying to recall the one clue that would lead to the treasure, which only he knows. Add in mysterious sightings of spacemen roasting hot dogs, a strange psychologist interviewing the townspeople, a Bucket of Bolts Overlanders expedition, and Bud’s suspicion that Wilma Jean is about to buy an airplane on the Internet, and there’s never a dull moment, even though all Bud really wants is the peace and quiet of watching his dogs play in the ditch on the farm.

10. The Cessna Cafe (2019)
When ex-sheriff and watermelon farmer Bud Shumway learns that his job is on the line, he knows that big changes are coming, though he has no idea exactly what kind. And with his wife’s new business running an air-based catering service, he knows she’ll be too busy to help him figure out his now uncertain future. Add in the invasion of his little Utah town by a group of wanna-be Vikings, and his employment woes soon take backstage to solving a murder—one in which the prime suspect is his friend, Sheriff Howie.
Follow along as Bud tries to figure out where Howie is disappearing to every night, as well as trying to deal with the chaos surrounding the arrival of the world’s largest steam engine and its numerous railfans, and you’ll see why Bud’s soon at his wit’s end. A wild Viking wedding on the river, a stolen thousand-year-old ring that supposedly holds the secret to happiness, and a missing deed that could potentially change the ownership of the farm Bud manages, and there’s never a dull moment, even though all Bud really wants is the peace and quiet of watching his dogs play in the ditch.

11. The Klondike Cafe (2019)
When a Mountie shows up in Sheriff Bud Shumway’s Utah office and accuses him of aiding and abetting a possible murderer in Canada’s Yukon Territory, Bud is mystified, especially since he doesn’t even know the guy. And when he receives a gold-mining claim transferred to his name and a cryptic message telling him to come to the Klondike Cafe, Bud is soon on his way, even though he has no idea where the cafe is or why his help is needed.
Join Bud on the adventure of a lifetime, as he discovers the beauty and sometimes deadly lure of the North Country, the land once charted on maps as the “Great Northern Mystery.”

12. The Yellow Cat Cafe (2020)
When a mystery writer from New York shows up in Sheriff Bud Shumway’s little Utah town, he doesn’t think much about it, other than to note that she seems to be avoiding him. But when a famous opera singer, also from New York, shows up shortly thereafter, Bud begins to worry that fact might follow fiction after he discovers that the writer’s latest book is about the murder of an opera singer.
Join Bud as he follows the pair into the wild and remote Yellow Cat Flats, a landscape that’s anything but flat, trying to prevent a potential murder while attempting to solve one already committed—all while dealing with lost tourists, a car-theft ring, a pack of rockhounds, and a couple of well-seasoned desert rats with their own bootleg radio show, all while trying to train his dog Lindie in the fine art of search and rescue.

13. The Swift Current Cafe (2020)
When Sheriff Bud Shumway’s aunt and uncle invite him and his wife to join them for a vacation in beautiful Glacier National Park, he has no idea that he’ll soon be on a search for their daughter, the same cousin Bud went to high school with and who everyone called the Jewel of the Desert. But Bud’s not sure what he can do to help, especially given the strange circumstances surrounding her disappearance and the fact that she vanished some 25 years ago.
Being Bud, he doesn’t let that stop him, and when his uncle also goes missing, Bud soon finds himself trekking through some of the wildest and most remote mountains in the Lower 48, a landscape filled with grizzly bears, sudden blizzards, thru-hikers, wiener dogs, aquatic entomologists, mysterious Red Bus jammers, and Flat-Earthers, far from Bud’s comfort zone in his quiet little desert town of Green River, Utah, all while trying to unravel the mystery of the Ghost of the Weeping Wall, as well as meeting up with a few ghosts of his own.
