Overview: The history of the Russian armored forces did not begin with tanks – its sources were armored cars. They appeared in the Russian army during the First World War – in October 1914 the first armored unit in the world was sent to the front.

To provide the army with this new type of military equipment, the Russian military department began both to manufacture armored vehicles at domestic enterprises and to purchase them abroad. The most successful for the Russian front were the armored cars of the British company “Austin” – in 1914-1917, 168 such vehicles were delivered to Russia, and another 50 were manufactured at the Putilov factory in Petrograd in 1919-1920.

“Austin” became the main and most massive type of armored car in Russia, not only during the First World War, but also during the Civil War, and they were used by all belligerent parties, and the trophy cars later served in the armies of Poland, Germany, Romania, Estonia, Latvia and Austria. In the Red Army, “Austin” was used until 1931. These machines fought in Europe as part of the British Royal Tank Corps, and were also used by British units in Mesopotamia and India.
