Overview: The Barney series (sometimes referred to as the "R" series because of the six titles — Rockingdown, Rilloby, Ring o’ Bells, Rubadub, Rat-a-Tat, and Ragamuffin) is the only series recommended solely for children over the age of eleven. The first book, The Rockingdown Mystery, was published in 1949.

1. The Rockingdown Mystery (1949) – Rockingdown hall is empty so why can strange noises be heard coming from the cellars? Diana, Roger, and Snubby are worried when their friend Barney disappears. Can they find him before it is too late?
2. The Rilloby Fair Mystery (1950) – The youngsters get mixed up in a strange mystery, the theft of papers from rooms whose doors and windows are locked. How are the robberies committed, and who is the thief? An exciting tale for boys and girls.
3. The Ring O’Bells Mystery (1951) – When Roger, Diana and Snubby go to stay at Ring O’Bells village, their old friend Barney hitch-hikes over with his monkey Miranda to join them. Barney has nowhere to stay so he decides to sleep in Ring O’Bells Hall which is now a museum. But eerie things start to happen – bells ring by themselves, noises come from a blocked-up secret passage, and there are some unfriendly strangers about.
4. The Rubadub Mystery (1952) – Diana, Roger, Snubby and Looney are sent away to recover after an illness. Their old friend Barney hitchhikes to stay with them and sleeps in the old Ring O’Bells museum.. but funny things happen there at night and the friends decide to find out whats going on! At Rubadub the gang are caught up with a sinister enemy agent at a top secret submarine harbour…
5. The Rat-A-Tat Mystery (1956) – Roger, Snubby, Diana and Barney are all looking forward to spending the winter holidays in a cosy old house surrounded by snow-covered hills. But who was knocking at the door in the middle of the night and what is the noise coming from the kitchen? Age 8+
6. The Ragamuffin Mystery (1959) – Merlin’s Cove seems the perfect place for a holiday for Roger, Diana, Snubby and Barney. But why is Snubby surprised on the beach by a bearded stranger? Who is his friend, the sinister birdwatcher, and why are they looking for a ragamuffin?
