Alf: A Novel by Bruno Vogel (first published 1929)
Requirements: MOBI / ePUB reader, 498 kb
Overview: It is 1914, in the German city of Leipzig. War clouds are gathering over Europe, while in the grammar-school classroom fifteen-year-old Felix Braun wrestles with his burgeoning sexuality. The repression of family, school and church weighs heavily on young Felix, but salvation comes in the shape of his fellow-student Alf. The boys become friends, and lovers, quite unaware that they’re breaking the law. Then the war breaks out, circumstances conspire to separate them, and Alf is caught up in the inferno of the trenches.
As an openly gay and pacifist novel, Alf unleashed a storm of controversy when published in Weimar Germany. It was banned and burned when Hitler seized power, though its author escaped to England. This first English translation of Alf is an important addition to the Gay Modern Classics series, complementing the contemporary British anti-war novel Despised and Rejected.
