Overview: I am the author of four Ruby Oliver books: The Boyfriend List, The Boy Book, The Treasure Map of Boys and Real Live Boyfriends. Other books: Fly on the Wall, Dramarama, The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks and How to Be Bad.
Disreputable History was a Printz Award honor book, a finalist for the National Book Award, and recipient of the Cybils Award for best young adult novel.
The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks
This book is, dare I say, a coming-of-age story. It’s not about breaking the rules, nor it is about controlling others. It’s about daring: daring to be yourself, daring to stand up for yourself, daring to step outside of your comfort zone, daring to change the world. This novel possesses all of the elements necessary for a good bildungsroman, following the protagonist’s journey through her formative years. History has an incredible conclusion, and Frankie becomes a remarkable young woman.
Dramarama
Their summer is one of friendship, jealousy, and new love. From "Cats" to "Guys and Dolls," this book tells all of the ups and downs of their summer, their new relationships, and just how hard the kids must work to be the actors they want to become in order to leave boring old Ohio behind them once and for all.
If you’re familiar with Broadway shows, this book will be even better. If not, visit the author’s website. You can download the songs that she references throughout the book.
Real Live Boyfriends
Ruby’s voice is absolutely charming and lovable. I love her sense of humor and her mature outlook on life. Although these characters were new to me, I fell in love with them almost immediately. I loved Ruby and Noel together and I was upset when they had relationship troubles after his trip to New York. The realization of what tore them apart was heart-shattering and I was anxious to see if at least their friendship would remain intact.
Overall, this seems like a great series.
The Boy Book
This again was a really fun novel. I like that Tate has an outdoor program and the Canoe Island trip that Ruby picks to go on sounds fantastic. Reading books and watching movies and discussing them count me in! I really don’t like Ruby’s friend Kim, she acts like she is so privileged when really she sort of just a bitch. Ruby seems a lot more crazy in this one, most likely due to the in-between nature of her shrink visits. I like that she got a job at the zoo, it was nice for her to have the calming nature of animals to help her, otherwise she might have really lost it. I also love the chapter titles in this one (The Care and Ownership of Boobs; Neanderthals on the Telephone: Or, How to Converse; Why Girls are Better than Boys) I recommend you pick this one up, it is not a disappointing book two.
The Treasure Map of Boys
Ruby’s strong voice and writing style are once again present in this book. Her footnotes, her notes at the beginning of the chapters, and uncommonly used words are all back and make Roo as entertaining as ever. The best part about Roo in this book is that she finally learns to grow. She still has her panic attacks, and freaks out over boys, but by the end, she really learns some lessons she needed to learn in order to make herself a better person. It got a little preachy when she went over all the things she had learned throughout the book, but it still showed that she is finally growing up.
The Boyfriend List
This book is about how a high school girl named Ruby lost her boyfriend, friends, and self esteem, and how she recovered. As I got to know Ruby, I found her endearing and adorable and had to read quickly to make sure she’d be okay. This book has fun, quirky footnotes; hilarious characters such as Ruby’s constantly bickering parents and her rebellious, loner guy friend; and well-drawn creeps who are some of Ruby’s ex-boyfriends and former friends. The Boyfriend List is fun, entertaining, and a little different too.
