Finding Paradise
Chris Berry has already realized many of his dreams by the age of thirty. He’s a qualified marine biologist living in New Jersey and working in New York with a great team of colleagues who feel just as passionately about their conservation work and research as he does. He’s close to his parents, he’s a staunch vegetarian, and he’s been with his boyfriend, Haydn, for nine years.
Haydn is everything Chris isn’t. He’s spoiled, lazy and dishonest. When Chris discovers that his long-term partner has once again cheated on him, Chris decided that enough is finally enough.
He’s dreamed of visiting the Hawaiian island of Makame for as long as he can remember, thanks to it being the home of the rarest turtle on the planet: the Calvert. Chris and his team have researched this elusive creature for many years and are desperately trying to raise funds to head there on a research boat when news breaks that the building of a luxury golf course in Hawaii could destroy the Calvert’s habitat.
Spurred on by his recent breakup and knowing time is of the essence, Chris self-funds the trip of a lifetime to Hawaii alone, hoping to find someone who’ll take him out to Makame, where he might just see the creature he’s spent years dreaming about.
What he never factored into his plans is meeting the gorgeous Elliott Sheaffer, who offers to personally escort Chris to the island of Makame after a chance meeting at the airport. But Chris is suspicious. He knows there’s more to Elliott than the handsome pilot is letting on, but Chris decides he’s lived safely for too long, and decides to take Elliott up on his offer.
But when a storm hits during their journey to Makame, they’re instead pushed so far south that they end up on a tiny island in the middle of the Pacific. Nobody knows they’re there, and supplies quickly run low.
Chris isn’t sure whether he’ll survive the experience, let alone see the Calvert turtle, or eventually get to know Elliott’s secret. The only thing he knows is that he’s stranded on a desert island with the hottest guy he’s ever known, and that danger doesn’t always come from the places you’d most expect…
Games We Play
Alex Loren has always known what he wants and he’s not afraid to get it. Things are going great for him. He’s training for qualifiers and might even go to the Olympics. Lucky for him, he’s been handpicked by one of the best trainers in the United States to join a team of prestigious swimmers, some of whom are guaranteed to be representing the country in the most important sports event in the world. Not just that, but his best friend from high school, Brooks Zhang, is also there. Being in Detroit is already a dream come true for Alex and he knows that things can only get better.
Brooks Zhang isn’t quite as ambitious as his best friend, but being in Detroit and training for qualifiers is also a dream come true for him. He doesn’t expect to get as far as the Olympics, and if he does, by some miracle, he doesn’t expect to be a medalist at all. One thing both Brooks and Alex agree on is that they are glad to have each other.
Until things start getting complicated. Alex soon realizes that what he thought were congenial feelings toward his childhood best friend may be more than that. Which would be fine, except that Brooks is straight and he’s not going to be interested in Alex in that way. Alex has to decide what matters most to him: his friendship with Brooks or his feelings for him. While Alex tries to make a decision, Brooks has to deal with his own changing feelings toward his best friend.
And as strong as their bond is, they might not be able to survive scheming teammates, a coach who seems to have ulterior motives, and getting through to qualifiers. At least not together.
Grace Notes
Gil DuPont likes life exactly the way it is. It might not be full of friends, love, and laughter, but he gave up on believing life would ever hold much of that for him anyway. A confirmed loner, and bachelor by default, his routine is important and rarely interrupted.
All that changes when he receives an unexpected visit from Child Protection Services one freezing Minnesota night. Originally believing they’re there to deliver bad news, he prepares himself for details of his estranged sister’s death. However, once he finds out that they have a different problem for him, he realizes his life is about to take an unexpected turn.
His sister, Marguerite, six years older than him and somewhat of a phantom throughout his life, has been taken into the hospital due to her problems with alcohol. Her illness has left in its wake someone Gil discovers is suddenly completely reliant on him: a little girl of eight. Gil had no idea he was even an uncle, but soon understands that he’s required to step up and take responsibility for Roxy.
As they settle down into a brand new routine, one where Gil is a care provider and new parent, he discovers that the joys of life can be found in the smallest things, not least of all his niece’s warm heart and childish innocence. What Gil certainly doesn’t expect, however, is for the dark and handsome Micah to come as an extra into the arrangement. A social worker who has made it his life’s work to ensure children are given the best possible chance despite somewhat difficult beginnings, he takes an interest in Gil and Roxy’s situation, and even Gil himself.
Loving Roxy comes easily to Gil, but allowing himself to be loved by Micah? That may be pushing things a little too far. But he’s about to learn that it’s not just his niece who’s been offered a second chance at happiness.
