Overview: Over the past twelve years, since the first edition of this bibliography, Yugoslavia has experienced many changes, although in general terms it is a case of ‘plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose’ (or, more appropriately to this volume, ‘sve vise promena, sve ostaje isto’). The death of Tito in 1980 was an event of overriding magnitude, but the consequences have perhaps not been as great as a few hoped, or, more fairly, many feared. The easy phrase for commentators in the 1980s has been ‘the Yugoslav crisis’, but Yugoslavia has always attracted catchphrases from ‘Balkanisation’ onwards: two recent examples which appeal are Dennison Rusinow’s ‘cliffhanger’ and (winner of the first prize) Stella Alexander’s ‘the despair of tidy minds’. If Yugoslavia can convey the impression of dealing with one problem by creating another, it is nevertheless unfortunate that much of the Western comment on Yugoslavia has centred on its perceived failures rather than its considerable achievements. Given the historical background and contemporary configuration of the Yugoslav lands and peoples we should do better to refrain from forecasts of the imminent break-up of the Yugoslav state and rather applaud the fact that it has held together, however precariously, against the odds for over seventy years Stevan Pavlowitch’s phrase ‘the improbable survivor’ is indeed apt.
