Overview: Pseudonym for all his fiction of US author John Robert Jones (1926-2017), whose first career was as a research ecologist for the US Forest Service, in which connection he published at least 20 pieces on ecology and high elevation forests. He began publishing work of genre interest with The Yngling (October-November 1969 Analog; fixup 1971; rev 1984), which, with its prequel, Homecoming (1984) – both assembled as The Orc Wars (omni 1992) – depicts a barbarian future whose history echoes that of the eponymous Norse kings of legend; eventually the hero of the saga leads his neo-Vikings south from the encroaching ice, though their ideal community is soon under threat; The Yngling and the Circle of Power (1992), a prequel, and The Yngling in Yamato (1994), conclude the project.

01. The Yngling
Earth, 2801: Through the centuries since the Great Death, Kazi the Undying has been a feared legend throughout the Middle East. Now he is emperor and conqueror, an emperor as mad as Caligula 2,800 years ago. In the dark forests of Sweden and Norway, where a new ice age is beginning, the neoviking tribes have their own legend of an Yngling, a youth who once saved them from destruction and will come again in time of threat. But they do not understand where the real threat lies.
02. Homecoming
Seven centuries ago, Earth’s infant first colony was mysteriously cut off without a ship of its own. For thirty generations the colonists have focused on survival, establishment, growth; their agrarian society evolving in an absence of war, with cooperation as the key. Now New Home has its own space program. When the first expedition lands on Earth, Captain Ram Uithoudt finds himself in a Middle Eastern empire where brutality and intrigue are the norm. To the West are rapacious feudal lords. And raiding the marches are the violent barbarian tribes of the inscrutable and deadly Nils Jarnhann.

Among the neo-Vikings of post-apocalyptic Earth, Nils is known as the Yngling, a mystic warrior who serves as the lawgiver and peacemaker for all the tribes. Blind, Nils’ inner vision makes sight superfluous, and he has never been defeated. But now he faces a conqueror who is leading an army a million strong.
04. The Yngling in Yamato
Among the Neo-Vikings of the post-apocalyptic earth, the Yngling is the mystic warrior who belongs to no tribe and serves as lawgiver and peacemaker. Now aided by his Star Men friends, the Yngling goes to Japan to confer with a renowned holy man–a disastrous voyage that proves a great challenge.
