Overview: Rick Cook (born 1944) is a light fantasy author from the United States, best known for his Wizardry series of books. His writing includes many jokes that are hard to appreciate without having a background in systems-level programming, though the books themselves can easily be enjoyed by readers without such a background.
What "Wiz" Zumwalt could do with computers was magic on Earth. Then, one day the master computer hacker is called to a different world to help fight an evil known as the "Dark League". Suddenly, the "Wiz" finds himself in a place governed by magic – and in love with a red-headed witch who despises him.
Genre: Fiction> Sci-Fi/Fantasy
Book #1 – Wizard’s Bane:
It all began when the wizards of the White League were under attack by their opponents of the Black League and one of their most powerful members cast a spell to bring forth a mighty wizard to aid their cause. What the spell delivered was master hacker Walter ""Wiz"" Zumwalt. The wizard who cast the spell was dead and nobody— not the elves, not the dwarves, not even the dragons—could figure out what the shanghaied computer nerd was good for. But spells are a lot like computer programs, and, in spite of the Wiz’s unprepossessing appearance, he was going to defeat the all-powerful Black League, win the love of a beautiful red-haired witch, and prove that when it comes to spells and sorcery, nobody but nobody can beat a Silicon Valley computer geek!
Book #2 – The Wizardry Compiled:
After his adventures in Wizard’s Bane, Wiz Zumwalt thinks he deserves a little peace and quiet. But The Black League is making plans to strike back at their nemesis, and Wiz must come up with another trick to defeat them. This time, he plans to bring to his new world the finest programming teams of Earth!
Book #3 – The Wizardry Cursed:
In a world where magic spells work like computer programs, master hacker Wiz Zumwalt is under an infallible prophecy of doom — and also under attack by computer criminals bent on global destruction in two worlds.
Book #4 – The Wizardry Consulted:
Back after too long an absence, Programmer and Systems Analyst extraordinaire Wiz Zumwalt, The Man Who Tamed Magic, returns–and he has been kidnapped by a dragon. His ransom demand is not wealth but salvation for dragonkind in this new human-friendly–but not dragon-friendly universe. What to do, what to do?
Book #5 – The Wizardry Quested:
Computer programming and magic have never been an easy mix, but when you add a couple of Soviet ex-spies, a 20-foot lobster hungry for a landfood dinner, 128 dwarves on a quest of their own, the Endangered Species Act, zombie dragon riders, a top-secret U.S. military base, a computer trade show, a pink mechanical rabbit with a gun and attitude–things get complicated for Wiz.
