Overview: The original, uncensored 1939 edition of Anais Nin’s third book and second volume of fiction is republished for the first time anywhere. Not to be confused with other Nin books titled ‘Winter of Artifice,’ which have dramatically different contents, these novellas that draw on Nin’s experiences are occasionally so graphic in detail that the book was, according to Nin, banned in America. The depiction of the love triangle among Hans, Johanna, and the narrator in "Djuna" is the precursor of Nin’s magnificent ‘Henry and June,’ the first volume of Nin’s unexpurgated diary, the movie version of which was the first film to receive the NC-17 rating. One of the few surviving copies of ‘The Winter of Artifice’ was used to produce this facsimile.
This rare 1939 Anais Nin text was almost lost in the war. Published in Paris as part of the Obelisk List of books which tended to be banned in England and America (eg Henry Miller and Lawrence Durrell), and as the third volume in the Villa Seurat Series (literary editor Henry Miller, 75 francs each volume), it has been beautifully restored in facsimile form by Sky Blue Press with an introduction by Benjamin Franklin V. The book includes three texts by Anais Nin: DJUNA, LILITH and THE VOICE. DJUNA is a fictional reworking of Anais Nin’s long and frenetic relationship with Henry Miller and his wife June (elaborated in the Henry and June segment of Anais’s Diary). LILITH covers the fraught and obsessive father-daughter relationship between Anais and her lost and estranged father (graphically treated in the Incest section of her Diary). And THE VOICE recapitulates the dramatic and long-lasting relationships between Anais and her psychoanalysts, in particular Dr Otto Rank, primary disciple of Freud and expert in Incest.
