Overview: Two hundred and fifty years ago the planet Earth was in trouble. Everything that could be dug up had either been burned as fuel, or turned into novelty key-rings. Everything that could be grown had been eaten … at least once. The atmosphere was thick and stale and the seas were dead and foetid. Worst of all, the science community had managed to let loose some pretty nasty stuff into the unsuspecting world in its various ineffective attempts to ‘fix things’. All this could mean only one thing … it was time to move on.
What was needed was a ship. But this was to be no ordinary Ship; this was to be the saviour of mankind. As such it had to have the backing and cooperation of everyone on the planet. It was therefore doomed from day-one.
It was the job of The Chairman of the Board of the World Committees of the Ship to steer a course through the figurative minefields to the point where the Ship was launched. The office of Chairman required no work per se; he was to the outside world merely a global figurehead. To the inside world of the Ship he was a scheming, vindictive, delusional, megalomaniac with more mood swings than a schizophrenic pendulum, and a mind that would have given Machiavelli a good shot at the Nobel Prize for Transparency. In short, he was perfect for the job. But dark forces are at work and the Chairman suddenly finds that he is nothing more than a pawn in a game that has different rules … and he’s not happy.
Meanwhile, in the bucolic land of Ag, a young man decides that the life of a village Trader is not for him. So, following in the footsteps of his sister he sets out to find her and map the world as he uncovers it. But there’s just one problem … the Barriers. The Barriers are huge sheer black slabs which rise out of the ground to a height of over two miles. They are clearly artificial and made of something resembling crystallised midnight. Nothing seems to stick to them, they are harder than diamond and light doesn’t so much reflect as bend around them in some strange way. With an impossible height, an unknown width, running arrow-straight northwards from the sea in the south, they were exactly what they said on the tin; Barriers. Bruno was determined to cross, but as a naïve stranger in a new world it wasn’t apparent how he was going to do it.
