Overview: When a traveling waxworks exhibition sets up shop at a local inn, Justina Audley, a beautiful widow resigned to a life of quiet monotony, is drawn into a dangerous web of murder and deceit.
The innkeeper appears one morning in the macabre waxworks display, murdered and posed to look like one of the eerie sculptures. The dead woman’s daughter is convinced that one of the eccentric visitors is responsible, and Justina, aided by the encouragement of her friends in the Spinsters’ Sewing Circle and her own sharp instincts, sets out to investigate the sinister scene.
As Justina delves deeper into the case, a tangle of suspects confronts her, including the waxworks’ talented creator, the resentful laborer with a dangerous secret, and the blackguard who follows the exhibition and refuses to leave the sculptor alone.
The pressure is on as All Hallow’s Eve approaches. With the help of her loyal sewing circle and the trustworthy Freddie Shrewsbury, a captain in the royal navy, Justina races against the clock to solve the mystery before the killer strikes again.
