Subsequent stories document Farstar’s recovery through skeins of guilt and self-recrimination as he trains his AI’s replacement and positions himself to reverse the monstrous evil trends that threaten the universe’s existence. A subtle thread throughout these stories is the growing sense in the reader that if the Edgemaster does not achieve success, the Arcturus will not have a place to which it can return at the end of its voyage.
