Overview: Colin Smith, a veteran war correspondent, has built an impressive reputation as a military historian," noted Sir Max Hastings in a review of ‘England’s Last War Against France’. Smith, whose award winning journalism took him from Saigon to Sarajevo, writes similar narrative histories as Hastings and Rick Atkinson though his subject matter can be less familiar. In ‘Singapore Burning’ he concentrates on the bitter retreat down the Malay Peninsula that preceded the fall of Singapore. His account of Britain’s forgotten war within a war against Pétain’s Vichy French covers all its land, sea and air fighting. More recently he completed a revision of Andrew Borowiec’s wartime memoir ‘Warsaw Boy’ for Viking Penguin. His work, praised by a wide range of reviewers, also includes the novels ‘Collateral Damage’, ‘Spies of Jerusalem’, and ‘Let Us Do Evil’.

Spies of Jerusalem
Palestine, 1917. A land of conflict. And a land of spies.

As World War One rages on the killing fields of Flanders, another battle is playing out in the Holy Land. British forces invade a stronghold of the Ottoman Empire, fighting German officers, Arab conscripts and Turkish troops. But as the British armies advance, the Germans suspect they have a traitor within their ranks. An agent – code-named Daniel – is transmitting messages to the British from the heart of the German headquarters. If they can’t stop him, the war will be lost. But as the Germans dig deeper, they discover an espionage ring called Nili made up of Zionist Jews supporting the British.

In a tale of intrigue and espionage the hunt for Daniel turns into a race against time, as the British prepare to meet the Austrian troops on the brutal battlefield at Huj.

Let Us Do Evil
Palestine, June 1942.

As the atrocities of World War Two start to make front page news across Europe, another battle is playing out in the Holy Land. British trained commandos have assassinated Reinhard Heydrich, Reich Protektor of Bohemia and a founder of the SS intelligence service. One of the Protektor’s disciples is an Anglo-German SS officer who was raised in Palestine as part of its affluent Templer community, descendants of Bavarian evangelicals who often embraced Hitler as firmly as their grandfathers embraced God. The Templer decides to avenge Heydrich by killing Sir Henry MacMichael, Palestine’s High Commissioner. But after The Templer attempts, and fails, to assassinate MacMichael, Palestine police detective Walter Calderwell begins to hunt him down. Calderwell relentlessly pursues the Templer from Jerusalem to the Egyptian border and on through the Nile Delta to the El Alamein front line itself. But can he stop him in time?
