02 To the Death

03 The War on Wessex
The Great Viking army is on the move again. It rules the kingdoms of East Anglia and Northumbria yet its leaders know they must vanquish Mercia and Wessex. Leif Ormson wants only a life of peace, telling tales with his family and friends. Yet his quick wits are invaluable to the Viking kings and he is drawn reluctantly into their plans.
Mercia is defeated and subdued. Finally, the Vikings turn their attention to the richest prize, Wessex. It is the most powerful kingdom and Alfred its king, the most dangerous of their foes. He has fought the hitherto invincible Vikings to a standstill and they will not forget it.
As they approach his kingdom he readies himself and his people for the final battle. And the Viking kings know that they have one invaluable resource. Leif had once been Alfred’s prisoner and he knows the minds of the young king and his advisers. Such knowledge will prove invaluable to the Vikings. And it means that Leif must reluctantly engage in warfare yet again.
