Overview: Late August, 1978, and Cassie Robinette – a young American exploring the world – arrives in Kabul with her boyfriend Ralph. There they meet Danny Mack, a Californian fresh from an ashram, and an enigmatic man named Marton Zámbó. In time, Cassie continues her journey with Danny and Marton across Afghanistan toward Iran.
Meanwhile, her friend Jack Hunter eagerly awaits a letter with details on meeting her in Istanbul. But a terse postcard arrives that seems to call off the rendezvous. Then no more letters come, and Jack sadly accepts that any nascent romance is over.
