Overview: Late August, 1978, and Cassie Robinette – a young American exploring the world – arrives in Kabul with her boyfriend Ralph. There they meet Danny Mack, a Californian fresh from an ashram, and an enigmatic man named Marton Zámbó. In time, Cassie continues her journey with Danny and Marton across Afghanistan toward Iran.
Meanwhile, her friend Jack Hunter eagerly awaits a letter with details on meeting her in Istanbul. But a terse postcard arrives that seems to call off the rendezvous. Then no more letters come, and Jack sadly accepts that any nascent romance is over.
Twenty-nine years later, Jack discovers her old letters and decides to reconnect. But he can find no trace of her. Sometime in September 1978, Cassie vanished.
The postcard, Jack now sees, hints that something was wrong. With mounting dread, he wonders if she was in trouble and he let her down. It was not a safe time: Soviet influence was growing in Afghanistan, and revolutionary unrest simmered in Iran. Were the men she traveled with dangerous as well?
Refusing to believe she’s dead, Jack is driven to find her. He mines her letters for clues, tracks down people she once knew, and travels far from his comfortable life as a professor.
And what he finds changes everything.

With reflections on memory, travel, culture and the meaning of love, vanished. tells a story of deception, obsession, murder, redemption and hope.
