On the other side of the country, Pat Jarvis is enjoying command school when he’s asked by Clayton to personally go out and sink the famous German U-123 and her infamous captain, Reinhard Hardegen. With a new boat and untried crew under his temporary command, Jarvis must do the impossible – locate and sink a submarine with another submarine.

Bull Shark and S-52 have just attacked a large bombardment fleet off the coast of Guadalcanal. And although they didn’t stop Henderson from being shelled, they might have at least curtailed it. Yet the Japanese are undaunted and more determined than ever… and the Empire has its sights set on some of its most deadly foes.

Upon conferring with General Vandegrift ashore, Captains Turner and Waters are informed that a group of refugees are trapped on New Ireland, just across the sound from Rabaul. Elmer Williams, recently flown in from Pearl, delivers orders from Webster Clayton and Admiral Nimitz to go and get them off before they’re found by Japanese troops and executed. and they’re being joined by some old friends.

Al Decker and his Marine Raider unit are put aboard Bull Shark and will go ashore to locate and rescue the Australian civilians. However, both submarines are unaware that they’re sailing into a large and complex spider’s web… a web spun from treachery, deceit and deadly intent. Now the race is on… can the boats and Decker’s men get ashore and get off again before The Sensei can close his trap and seal their fates? Or will they all be squeezed to death in the iron grip of Hirohito’s lust for power?
