Overview: Matías “Matt” O’Brien was once a Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) detective assigned to the Robbery-Homicide Department in the old Parker Center in downtown LA. Because of his Hispanic background and fluency in Spanish, he was often assigned cases in the East LA (Hollenbeck) Division.
In 2006, Matt was quickly and surprisingly charged with the abuse of a black suspect. This rush to judgment, which didn’t seem credible to his fellow detectives, led to his early retirement from the LAPD. Shortly thereafter, he accepted a position as a detective in the Oceanside Police Department in North San Diego County.
Ten years later, this story unfolds in Oceanside. Matt and his new partner are sent to the scene of a double homicide. At first, the motives behind the murders seem clear-cut. But that view quickly disappears as a multidimensional case evolves, requiring their eventual collaboration with the FBI. It’s a case that tests the character of those involved, and it reminds each of them—in a quite deadly manner—that justice isn’t always dispersed in a courtroom.
The trail of crime leads the team of investigators from Oceanside to Mission Bay (San Diego), to Obregon Park in East LA, and eventually to an exclusive residential enclave in West LA (Brentwood). Along the way, Matt is reunited with his boyhood best friend in east LA, who aids his investigations in surprising ways.
