Liverpool in the 1920s: still Dickensian in its poverty, a city of docklands and back alleys, barefoot kids running wild in the filthy streets, bizarre eccentrics and sectarian violence. This is the world marvelously evoked by Jack Robinson in the story of his boyhood: forced to fend for himself from the earliest age, searching the city for adventure, love and sex, and joining the army as a 14-year-old boy soldier. Teardrops on My Drum is an autobiographical novel of Jack Robinson’s boyhood in Liverpool, UK, in the 1930s (ISBN 0-85449-261-5, Gay Men’s Press, 1998). It is a story of the sexual adventures of a young gay boy growing up in poverty and with parental neglect. It tells Jackie Robinson’s story up to the age of fourteen. Eddie, a man who has sex with him in a cinema, turns out to be a police officer who continues to have a consensual loving relationship with him. Jackie has sexual encounters with older men, mature teenagers, and boys. Jackie goes through a series of casual relationships, searching out new partners, then signs up and joins the army. Army life suits Jackie and he forms an intimate relationship with two other recruits, Chesty and Toby, in his regiment.
Jack & Jamie Go to War (1988) is the sequel to Teardrops on my Drum and tells Jackie’s story from his return to Liverpool as a fifteen-year-old ex-soldier to his move to London as a twenty-six-year-old, accompanied by his very own fifteen-year-old boy. In between, he roams the world as a soldier (again) and a sailor, never short of a young friend.
