Overview: Lonely history professor Gunther Hall realizes he’s just drifting through life when he learns his first love, architect James Whittaker, has opened a new office in a nearby city. Impulsively, Gunther decides give up his annual summer research trip to rent two dilapidated rooms in a boarding house directly across from James’ office.
It’s Gunther’s hope to build up the courage to connect with James again after all these years. But he spends his days restoring the rooms — and his own flagging sense of relevance — while talking with the young James he remembers.
