Overview: Crime novellist Tessa Dale turns her attention to Victorian England and draws us into very different murders, in very different worlds. By a quirk of fate, Inspector Edward Mallory is detailed to investigate a series of deaths in Yorkshire. The case coincides with the start of the infamous Whitechapel Murders, and Mallory is torn between both investigations. He is convinced that his friend, Frederick Abberline, the Yard’s best detective, is on the wrong track, and tries to move him down a different path. The deaths in Pickerings, Yorkshire continue, until Mallory breaks the case, and is able to return to London. Mallory embarks on a wild cat and mouse chase, convinced he has the real name of Jack the Ripper at his fingertips. Always a clue behind, the Scotland Yard team arrive late, time after time.
After some diligent legwork, Mallory thinks he has found his man – or at least, his name – but the culprit has melted away into the London fog. Mallory sets a trap and waits, unaware that the Whitechapel Murderer has been following his investigation with interest. THe watcher is neing watched, and by a man with intellect, and the raw desire to keep on killing.
Tessa Dale has stepped out of the comfort zone of thirties crime, and taken a bold step into Victorian Gothic Horror. This might well be her best novel to date.
