Overview: Tough Guys and Dangerous Dames is a celebration of the hard-boiled detective, a true American folk hero who stood with one foot firmly planted in the imaginations of writers and the other in the reality of twentieth-century urban America. He first began appearing in stories about the time that popular fiction began reflecting the gritty facts of life in “The Roaring Twenties”: racketeering, organized crime, bootlegging, police corruption, and other anti-social activities that elite nineteenth-century crime fighters might have deemed beneath their dignity. He was a man of the people who believed in democratic ideals and sought ways to circumvent the injustice of traditional systems of law enforcement. Unlike his Holmesian predecessors, who rarely soiled their fingers, the hard-boiled detective was also a man of action who was not afraid to enforce his personal code of honor with the appropriate hardware. If you didn’t admire his values, you at least had to respect his body count.
