Overview: It is late 21st Century.
Life on Earth is well past ‘peak affluence’.
World economies have been contracting for decades.
The Administration had known for decades that a deep space mission lasting six or more months would have physical and psychological consequences for the ship’s crew. Extensive training in capsule simulators, the Arctic and Antarctic had revealed much about how humans reacted to living in extreme close quarters and harsh conditions, but the Earth’s gravity was always a constant.
In the micro gravity of deep space, there were many variables that could not be modeled or planned for on Earth. One particular question perplexed everyone who worked in the space industry: What would be the psychological effect on humans so deep in space that they could no longer see their home planet? If the crew continued to stare into the abyss, how long would it take before the abyss stared into them?
Many questions would remain unanswered until the ship’s communication link was repaired.
