Take, Burn or Destroy
By 1805, the Emperor Napoleon is coming to the peak of his powers. No land force appears able to stand against him and the French armies are triumphant all across Europe. The Austrians, Prussians and Russians seem powerless to block Bonaparte’s ambitions. A huge army waits at Boulogne, ready cross to England, if only the Royal Navy could be defeated or tricked out of the way.
But in London King George’s government remains committed to blocking Napoleon’s ambitions. The navy retains command of the seas and British gold buys a series of fragile alliances with the foreign powers. Every effort is made to thwart the French.
The army does what it can to support the work of the treasury and the navy. The redcoats have nothing like the numbers of the senior service, nor the glorious record of success boasted by their bluejacket brothers, but the will to fight is there. The generals are not content for their men to stay idle in home garrisons – they want to hit the enemy where and when they can. If the navy can put a force ashore, the soldiers will do everything in their power to bring confusion to the French!
While Napoleon has much of Europe under his hand, the British are building a world empire and they wish to expand and protect it. Trade routes and ports must be won and defended. The bankers, politicians and military men are ruthless and ambitious. The fight is carried to the French not only by men carrying musket and sword, but also by gold, diplomacy and cunning.
The tenth tale in the acclaimed Ties of Blood series, Take, Burn or Destroy looks at the early careers of a number of the characters readers have come to know through the books focusing on the Peninsular War, the War of 1812 and Waterloo. The story takes place on three continents and is told through the usual winning blend of solid historical fact and fast-paced adventure fiction.

A Dozen Bakers
Peter Youds’s Ties of Blood series of novels traces the lives, loves and adventures of a large cast of characters who find themselves thrown together with some of the most memorable real-life figures of the Napoleonic Wars. Now comes the series’ first collection of short stories.
The leading players in the sequence of novels are rounded characters, often with interesting pasts, but the fast pace of the full-length books does not always allow for an exploration of all these intriguing goings-on. The thirteen tales in this collection go some way to adding mortar to the strong stone-work of the series, involving key players in a number of dramatic encounters.
The eleventh title in the Ties of Blood series, A Dozen Bakers covers a lot of ground. The action takes place over a thirty-year period and is located in half a dozen European countries. The sequence looks at the back-stories of a number of the characters readers have come to know through the novels, but each tale stands up as a self-contained story.
While the novels trace many of the big events of the Peninsular War, the War of 1812 and Waterloo, these stories wander off into some intriguing byways. So, if you want to know about Sir John Moore being invited to invade Russia, Nelson at Cadiz, how Britain won the Battle of Leipzig or Lord Wellington’s counterfeiting racket – A Dozen Bakers is for you!
