Overview: The narrator of this story is a forever unnamed boy at that wonderful age of imagination when obstacles are conquered with imaginary cannons and soldiers.

It begins at the deathbed of the central character Malpas the baker, who is regretting the horrific thing he had done many years prior, to his late wife. After his last breath and still abiding in the room with his now deceased uncle, the boy, now a man, begins to relive the youthful chapter of his life when he spent a period of time visiting his aunt (also unnamed) and uncle Malpas in the village of Faitham Corner, some miles from he and his parents home.

With his two horses and wagon, old Timely Blunt, the village kilnster, along with his step-son Gabriel agrees to go to Faitham and repair uncle Malpas’s bread baking kiln. This in turn provides the means of transport for the boy’s memorable journey, as well as creating the story’s central theme of three rather large rusty nails wrapped in an old piece of red velvet cloth, purchased during a rest-stop by Gabriel from some Gypsys who dubiously assure Gabriel that the nails were the very ones used to crucify Jesus.

During his stay the boy experiences and learns some of the finer points of baking fine bread and sweet pastries, but what he eventually witnesses completely precludes anything baking in the oven.
