- Chapter 1 – 26 January 2008
- Here it is, Things to Do in Dagenham When You’re Dead, chapter 1!
When the Popsicle Twisty site went down, we received a lot of e-mails and requests concerning putting the comic back up somewhere so that people could still read and enjoy it. I’m proud to present to you the first chapter, now, years after these first 8 pages were written and drawn.
Minor changes were made to the version I’m presenting to you, the major one being the font used. This one is much easier to read and work with.
Creator’s notes on Chapter 1:
- Chia and I began the planning to Dagenham when the Gorillaz website was still its white default layout, in the middle of Kong’s first closure after the first album. She had written a short fanfic in which the comic was based on, but it became a much larger project that we could ever expect.
You might be able to tell from the artwork that some pages were redrawn. I did this a year or so after the comic was finished because I just couldn’t stand some of my older artwork. I had plans to redo other pages, but I never did, and probably never will now.
The first page, page "zero", was added when the comic was about halfway through… hence the scrunched up look of some of the text. It was added to kind of incorporate the idea of the underworld right from the beginning, so it didn’t suddenly come up from nowhere after the comic’s introduction.

Personally, the only page I still like from this chapter is the last one… the rest of them are pretty shoddy art-wise, in my opinion. >_>

I’m a bit more satisfied with the artwork in this chapter. I made a few adjustments, but I’m sure no one will remember how it used to look anyway xD
The chapter after this one is one of my favorites, I’ll probably upload it pretty soon as a result.

Chapter 5 – 28 August 2008
- Here’s chapter 5! I gave this chapter quite a few revamps, at least in comparison to how little I touched the other chapters posted so far. I guess as they get into the underworld, I care a bit more about the quality of the artwork.
This is one of my favorite chapters. You can really see in these few pages how excellent Chia’s writing and dialogue is, so creative and so witty.
Chapter 6 – 3 January 2009
- Here’s chapter 6. Chapter 6 was definitely the most fun to draw, I think. I have really good memories of drawing this WHOLE comic, but this one especially – I just did whatever felt right, it was just really fun to draw and color.
Unfortunately the art itself hasn’t aged well and I cringe a little when I look back on it… oh well.
Chapter 7 – 3 January 2009
- Yeah, notice something about this chapter? It’s really, really long. Way longer than the other ones. XD Originally we intended each chapter to be 8 pages, but at this point we were like "**** it" and kept going until a good time to stop came up.
Around the time I was working on these parts, where they’re in the Underworld, the Gorillaz website was being updated for phase 2, for the release of "Demon Days". Guess you can see the influence.
Chapter 8 – 28 July 2009
- Here it is, chapter 8, the conclusion. Looking back, I think we overdid it on the emo with Murdoc, but ah well. At least the timing with the thunderstorm makes it feel a little purposely ironic. I didn’t write this comic so I can’t say that was what Chia was going for. xD
Even now, I am particularly proud of pages 75, 76, 80, 84, and 89. And the last panel of 95. Lol persepctive how did I do that.
I guess it only makes sense that this chapter is the best looking, though, since it was the last one drawn. I drew Dagenham over several years, so not only was I used to drawing the characters at this point, but I’d become better at drawing in general. Just try comparing the artwork here to the earlier chapters (excluding the pages that were so bad I redrew them).

- All in all, looking back, I’m pretty satisfied with this fancomic still, all things considered. Will I ever revisit it? Maybe. I’d need Chia’s input, and we haven’t talked in years. Seeing as how album #3 is in the works right now, we’ll have to see! I wonder what teenage Noodle will look like ^_^
