The plot develops through the use of flashbacks, as Mérite-Lajoie from her deathbed in the women’s state penitentiary, reveals the greater dimensions of the nightmare, thirty years later. Both Bee and Mérite-Lajoie struggle with guilt and reconciliation as they bring to life their memories, remembering the early sixties strife, while Mérite-Lajoie explains why she suffers from the new warden’s religious dogma within the penitentiary. It is a story about girls, families, myths, aspirations, manipulation, and recovery. Punctuated with music from the sixties, Cajun compositions, original poems and stories, the reader will find wildlife and recipes, along with questions about belief, about envy, about empathy, and about sharing, as well as, thoughts about heroes, about death and about dreams. There are genealogies of immigrants and war veterans, amidst hurricanes, ruin, and spoliation.
