The Yellow Mistletoe by Walter S. Masterman
Requirements: ePub reader, 690kb
Overview: The Yellow Mistletoe (1930) is a rollicking tale that begins with murder in the London Underground. It looks to be an accident – until Chief-Inspector Arthur Sinclair proves that it wasn’t. The trail of evidence leads to the English countryside where Sinclair meets a varied cast of characters. The novel gradually morphs from a seemingly-straightforward mystery novel to something completely different. The action eventually shifts to an isolated area of Bulgaria, where a hidden city provides enough ritualistic danger for a dozen thrillers.
Walter (Sydney) Masterman (19 December 1876 – 16 May 1946) was an English author of some 25 novels of mystery, horror and science fiction, published between 1926 and 1942. However, few of his books are widely available today
The Yellow Mistletoe is one of two Masterman novels (the other being The Flying Beast) included in the legendary “KEW 39”. Originally published in 1983 in “Twilight Zone” magazine, this list outlined the 39 horror novels which the late Karl Edward Wagner considered to be the best published; although they may also be seen as his personal favourites, including many that he considered deserving of greater attention. Masterman’s inclusion in the list revived interest in his work, although only a few of his novels are available.
Whether or not you consider The Yellow Mistletoe to be one of the “best” novels of its type, it is undoubtedly a wildly entertaining example of Between-the-Wars British horror-thrillers.
