Overview: The people dethroned their king. It was the only way to end the tyranny. They now nominate a State Head every three years and Altarn is the first female to hold the position. The men of her court are hesitant to follow a female, especially now with her reasons to believe that Byrone, a trusted ally, is subtly trying to steal her land. But she won’t be swayed and, despite the disapproval from her court, Altarn travels to their last ally to ask for aid in the war against Byrone she knows is coming. Despite discovering this foreign army is led by a fallen angel craving mortal worship, Altarn’s ally refuses to aid and she is forced to turn, instead, to Byrone for help. Byrone agrees to aid but at a price; he wants Altarn’s land as payment. Even though Altarn was right all along about Byrone’s intentions to take her land, her army is not strong enough to win the war alone. So she’ll accept Byrone’s help but must think of a way to stop his conquest before he makes himself a king.
