Overview: The Valley is a fast-paced, psychological thriller about a murder. It is both a classic page-turner and a dark morality tale about contemporary Britain.
Its narrator, John Flood, starts his tale as he is being questioned by detectives about the disappearance of Lucy Grainger, the wife of his former friend and business partner, Max. John protests his innocence but as the police dig deeper, a far more complicated web of intrigue is revealed; at its centre is the enigmatic, brilliant and sometimes threatening Max Grainger.
Although the novel is set in South West London, the Valley it refers to is more a mindset than a geographical area. It is the modern urban successor to the middle class suburbs of the sixties and seventies, with tastefully extended Victorian terraced houses taking the place of mock-Tudor semis. There is the same fear of being left behind, the same frustration at unrealised dreams, and the same desire to live in something more meaningful than a postcode. To Max Grainger, flitting between his homes in the Caymans and Europe, the Valley and its comforts and limitations are all an illusion. But to John they are very real, and powerful enough to corrupt his good intentions.
As more people disappear in suspicious circumstances, John finds himself trapped. He can still escape but only if he is prepared to risk everything he has come to regard as important in life – and that includes his decades-old friendship with Max.
