Overview: I grew up reading Beverly Cleary and Madeleine L’Engle, loving their skillful way of weaving a story together. My own children got me hooked on the Harry Potter series, which in turn inspired me to attempt to write my own books.
Most of my book ideas come through my vivid and detailed dreams. My “Scars of Defiance” series began as a recurring dream over 17 years ago. It took me until 2005 to begin writing the dream down which proved to be a bit difficult, mainly because I never excelled in English class. I should have paid better attention.
A Diamond In My Pocket began as a dream also. However, it was a rare event for me because: 1) the dream was fantasy and I never dream in fantasy settings, and 2) the dream had a beginning, middle, and end. I remember waking up and thinking, Wow! I’ve got to write that down! I spent the better part of four days typing 50,000 words. Not much of the original story line has changed throughout the editing process. There were parts that didn’t fit into the story such as other powers and abilities, but those were worked into the following books in the series. My daughter, Luna, helped me immensely in developing the back-story of the magical diamond and the possibilities of where the series could go. She is an active collaborator with The Unaltered series

#3 – The Diamond of Freedom
The Diamond of Freedom, book three in The Unaltered, melds together history, geology, metaphysics, science, and fantasy in this non-stop nail biter. Calli and Chris race against the clock to identify the power-neutralizing stone that prevents Calli from healing her life-threatening injuries. She must also learn how to counter its effects before she can fight against the rogue Diamond Bearer named Freedom to save the boy she loves and the world of her friends.
In the epic battle between extreme cosmic-power holders, weaknesses are exploited and lifetime relationships shattered to gain the upper-hand. Sometimes having no special abilities is what makes someone the most powerful. General Harding, Chris’s father, has made it his life’s mission to eradicate all people with powers. Calli meets Brand Safferson’s half-sister, self-named Deus Ex, and proclaimed mercenary. Her repeating abilities are necessary to rescue Brand from General Harding’s compound, but the risks of recruiting her to abandon Freedom’s side and join Maetha’s may be deadly. Maetha provides proof that she’s figured out how to heal the DNA of an altered human, creating an Unaltered individual
#4 – The Diamond Bearers’ Destiny
Calli Courtnae learns about Chris Harding’s motives behind the recent events, and tries to understand his dilemmas, while at the same time she learns what the big picture actually is, and where she fits.
General Harding figures out what lies at the heart of Agent Alpha’s research project. He’s determined to complete the studies and become an all-powerful Diamond Bearer—once Chris delivers Calli to him. What General Harding fails to understand is Diamond Bearers are not the most powerful individuals on the face of the earth. They are agents of nature, working for Crimson—the creator of the Sanguine Diamond. Upsetting the balance of nature is the last thing General Harding should do.
Follow Calli, Chris, Brand, and Crimson in the dramatic conclusion of The Unaltered Series as they battle Deus Ex, undead Healers, and General Harding, in an effort to balance nature..
#5 – The Diamond Bearer’s Secret
The Diamond Bearer’s Secret, book five of The Unaltered. Calli learns that everything she’s been through since receiving a diamond has been in preparation for a much larger purpose. An event looms in the future that could end life as she knows it and her assistance is crucial. The problem is, the Diamond Bearers are dividing at a time they should be uniting and she is viewed as a young upstart by centuries-old comrades. They’re not about to let her upset their ranks or move forward with plans that go against their thinking. They’re unaware Calli can hear their grumblings and, through her, Crimson. Neither Calli nor Crimson back down. The ultimatum still stands: support nature’s will or surrender your diamond.
Problems arise over an anonymous blog revealing critical information about people with powers. The blog must be stopped before the secrets of the Diamond Bearers are released. Unfortunately, the powers contained within the Sanguine Diamond don’t include the ability to shut down a blog–nor do Diamond Bearers rooted in antiquated practices have a clue about how to address this life-threatening issue. Only those who understand how the virtual world works can fight against a virtual enemy.
With everything escalating around them, Chris and Calli still find time to get to know each other better. Will they like what they find? What other information will be found within the files from General Harding’s compound? The more pressing question is, are Crimson and Maetha still keeping secrets from Calli?
