Overview: The Twelve Kingdoms is a series of novels that focus on a world inspired by Chinese mythology, where twelve kingdoms exist under the rule of an individual chosen by the Heavens. Genre: Fantasy
Book 1: Shadow of the Moon, a Sea of Shadows
The book narrates the adventures of Yoko after being brought by Keiki to the world of the Twelve Kingdoms. Yoko finds out that she is not a Kaikyaku, an ordinary human who was swept across the sea from Japan to the Twelve Kingdoms, but a Taika – a human who was swept away to Japan from the Twelve Kingdoms before her birth and was then brought back to the Twelve Kingdoms.
Book 2: Sea of The Wind, Shore of The Maze
Born in Japan and raised as a human, Taiki is overwhelmed when he’s brought back to the kingdom of Tai, where he’s told he’s a kirin. With little knowledge or guidance, he must trust his latent instincts to choose a king for the Kingdom of Tai from among dozens of men and women who seek the position. Will the frustrated Taiki, who can’t even figure out how to transform into animal form, make the right choice? And more important, will he discover the kirin that lives within?
Book 4: A Thousand Leagues of Wind, the Sky at Dawn
After a year of depending on her ministers to govern the kingdom of Kei, Yoko follows Keiki’s advice and descends the mountain to live among her people, eager to learn how to be a better leader from the village’s wise-man, Enho. However, when Enho is kidnapped, Yoko finds herself thrust into an all-out war between the kingdoms. Friendships and alliances are put to the test during the Battle of Wa Province. Can Yoko summon the strength to take up her responsibilities as Queen?
Book 5: The Wings of Dreams
Shushou, the youngest daughter of a wealthy merchant, has become frustrated by the state of her kingdom and how no adult has managed become king to quell the demons that run rampant in Kyou after twenty-seven years since the death of the previous ruler. As a result, she takes it upon herself to ascend Mount Hou and have the kirin of Kyou accept her as the new monarch of Kyou.
Book 6: The Shore in Twilight, The Sky at Daybreak
After the disappearance of Taiki and Gyousou, the kingdom of Tai has been left in dire conditions and in a state of civil war. In desperation, Risai, a general of Tai, manages to escape the kingdom and flees to Kei, where she beseeches the monarch of Kei to help find Taiki.
Book 7: Dreaming of Paradise
The Dream of Prosperity is composed of five short stories set in different kingdoms in the Twelve Kingdoms. Some stories are set between earlier novels or involve familiar characters, while others do not. The stories are Jogetsu (Ally of the Moon), Shokan (A Letter), Kasho (Prosperity) and Kizan (Home of the Mountain).
