Overview: I’m a Massachusetts transplant, who moved to Florida in 2011. Turns out that was the best thing I could have done. If I hadn’t, I would never have met Jennifer, and Ahldir would likely not have turned out as it has. Jenn and I now live together on the Treasure Coast, with our dog (Fortune Cookie), and our three cats (Dolce, Jaqen, and Ash). At the time of this writing, I am still working a day job, and doing my best to turn my writing into a career I can live off of. And Jenn is working her day job, hoping that I can make us filthy rich. I prefer writing dark and gritty fantasy, though I think all good writing–especially the dark stuff–needs a bit of humor to leaven the mix. A little more about me? I think most meats taste better in a burrito, I like craft beer, and I go to the gym mainly so I can continue eating the tasties while still maintaining (or losing some of) my weight. I also think "taco Tuesday" should be made mandatory on a global scale.

Some blades have a soul.
Thornblades. There are several of the ancient blades known to exist, and all of their kind are outlawed by both Church and Crown. With a will of their own, and the ability to siphon blood in exchange for arcane effect, the weapons are immensely deadly, and not only to those cut by them–the wielder, if they are not careful, can lose themselves in the rapture of power, allowing their soul be drained and merged with that of the weapon.

1. Beware the Thorns
In "Beware the Thorns," a group of villagers is returning from a typical late-autumn hunt, but find that some of their number have gone missing–and one of those is Rhett’s only son, Nial. With the unnatural Shroud not far from rising, Rhett chooses to go off looking for the others, his closest friend going with him. As dangerous as the highlands they live in can be, Rhett only hopes to find his son alive. But when he finds his boy has discovered a thornblade, things can only end in blood.

Ahldir is a gritty world of kingdoms and empires in the midst of their industrial revolution, where civilization huddles–mostly–in densely packed cities, for nightly the lands are covered by an unnatural fog known as the “Shroud.” Though the short tale that I tell here takes place away from these cramped and bustling metropolises, giving the reader a glimpse into the lives of those who dare to settle in the Shroudlands.

2. We Dwell in Grey
Leaving Broch Dondrig behind, Rhett and Loh seek shelter at a nearby abbey, only to find that others are willing to kill them for what they recovered in those ruins. Who do you trust when all are either strangers or enemies?
