1.The Beginning
Irony is winning the Powerball lottery six months before the world’s economies meltdown. The Shelter tells the story of a family who wins $27 million in the lottery, they pull roots and move to Nashville where they buy a large home bordered by three farms. With the money in hand the world’s economies in the process of melting down. They ‘buy the farm.’ They purchase the three farms and the 7,000 square foot house. The farms are able to provide food when the economies collapse. The house is large enough to hold all of their extended family. To ensure their survival, Jay decides to build a large shelter under the farmland. Jay befriends the local Mafia ‘Don’, Tony, who helps him in exchange for a ticket in the shelter. Book one tells the story of Jay and Lacy, winning the lottery, their move to Nashville, buying the farms and building the shelter while the world goes to hell around them. The world starts to melt down when the people of Greece elect a new Prime Minister, who defaults on their loans to Germany. The EU falls apart when the other European Nations follow Greece’s lead. China demands payment of its debt from America or the state of Hawaii. The President increases taxes to raise the $1.4 trillion needed to pay China back, putting enormous stress on the American economy. Russia adds gasoline to the fire by dumping their dollars. Russia helps destabilize the EU so they can invade by offering humanitarian aid. When the American economy collapses, distribution of food stops, starvation becomes a real problem. The cities explode in violence due to the lack of food and clean water. As the insanity spreads, Jay builds a shelter complex to house over 40 people for more than a year without surfacing. A shelter, he thinks, is an insurance policy, one he hopes he’ll never have to use. A shelter complex he and his neighbors, need in order to survive an invasion of their farms. All of their winnings are worthless when the only real currency is a loaf of bread and a bottle of clean water.
2. A Long Days Night
Following the events of Shelter Book 1, Jay, his neighbors and friends have no choice but to face the aftermath together. The resilient group of survivors never thought they would actually have to live in the shelters they worked so hard to construct. They begin facing issues they hadn’t accounted for; the confinement in small spaces, clashing personalities and conflicting opinions on how to handle the hostile group on the surface. Jay’s inner demons and guilt come out causing him to almost slip into a dark abyss.
While Jay and his extended family are trying to deal with their inner demons in their shelter, China and the US Navy are fighting the largest naval battle since the Second World War. A battle which will determine who will own Hawaii.
The US Army is trying to restore order in the country while dealing with millions of starving and angry citizens.
China reaches out to the citizens in California, explaining how their lives would improve if they vote to merge with the PRC.
The President and Congress are playing political games while the country comes apart. When things look like they can’t get any worse, Jay’s enemy, the local Sheriff shows up at Jay’s house looking to finally get what he thinks he deserves. Jay takes three men with him to perform a recon of his home when Mother Nature turns against him.
4. The New World
The Shelter, book 4, The New World takes place immediately after the events in book 3. Jay’s life hangs in the balance after being poisoned by one of his extended family. The Shelter is under attack by members of El Chap’s cartel and ISIS. Neither has been able to find a way into the shelter. The surviving members of the Army recon platoon call for help which is answered by a local militia who responds, they fight the cartel and ISIS while making an unusual payment demand to the shelter.
The world’s economies collapsed when the dollar fell in value resulting in a worldwide depression. Regular currency is useless since it’s based on the government’s faith and good will. With the world’s governments in shambles a group in Huntsville develops a new currency which leads some to think about the South rising from the country’s ashes. Jay agrees to accept the new currency, which changes the relationship between the Shelter’s families and the local towns.
Ricky has to face the families in the shelter to account for his crimes against them, and the attempted murder of Jay. He’s put on trial to answer for his sins. The community is his jury. He has to answer for his crimes. Even in his punishment he plans his revenge against everyone in the shelter.
The USS Missouri is repaired and able to surprise the Chinese even though the President ordered a stand down.
The country begins to fracture from the economic stresses and high unemployment.
5. War
The country is on the edge of another civil war. The war Jay doesn’t want, quickly spreads to his shelter. It explodes on his farm, harming his extended family. Good friends are caught up in the war. Ricky supports the North, Tony and most of the families support the South. Jay is pulled from each side. He supports the personal responsibility and freedoms of the South. He’s afraid a civil will cause too much pain and suffering. He’s worried about fighting the mighty US military. He realizes he was right when the bombs begin falling on his shelter.
The Tennessee Governor wants to use the shelter as his base of operations which will push Jay and the families out. Both the militia and the army are building shelters similar to Jay’s. Jay worries too many people know about his shelter. He and his friends agree to begin building a new shelter which just happens to be under Ricky’s feet. The Tennessee Governor appoints Jay as his LT Governor before flying to D.C. to join a meeting of the Southern Governors and the President. Shortly after landing at Andrews Air Force Base, the Governors disappear, Jay and his fellow Southern LT Governors have to assume the office of Governor and hold the new Confederacy together while the President holds a town hall meeting to convince the North the South has to be punished. The President plans on a decapitation strike during his town hall meeting so he can announce the new civil war is over before it could draw blood. The South is ready and is able to strike back at the North’s most vulnerable underbelly by taking down the North’s electrical grid.
Jay’s trying to hide the construction of another shelter, one hardened more than the current one. Ricky knows something is going on near him, he’s spoken to Tennessee Governor Abrams, he knows the Governor doesn’t agree with everything Jay stands for.
