Overview: A tyrannical, dystopian society ruled by the dictatorship of the Benevolent Mother and the Political Committee has a network of orphanages where children are raised to become model citizens of the state. One group of teenage orphans has been put together to be trained for a highly-classified, secret mission involving some kind of space exploration. The teenagers quickly split into two rival groups: one made up of likeable and honorable teenage kids, and the other with unpleasant and contemptible individuals. The orphans in the former group are kept in the dark about the nature of this secret mission, and they are deeply concerned about the dangers they will face.
A simultaneous narrative describes the adventures of Forrest Stillwell, whose great-great-grandparents Dexter and Catherine Stillwell created Stillwell Industries over a century and a half earlier. Forrest recently earned a PhD in astronomy where his doctoral thesis was on gas giant planets. He is now ready to head out into the world with his first professional job as an astronomer teaching at a university. However, he immediately runs into a conflict with his new boss, the malicious Vera Cummings and the arrogant Richard Cartwright, the most prominent faculty member in the Astronomy department.
Forrest meets the lovely Allison Flanagan, and the two of them become good friends with the brilliant but controversial Dr. Maria Fernandez, who has spent years researching the provocative subject of extraterrestrials. Eventually malevolent forces start to gather around Forrest and Allison.
Throughout these parallel stories, a strange tall woman with shoulder-length blond hair, intense blue eyes and thin red lips wearing a light-blue uniform mysteriously appears. Witnesses who encounter this mysterious woman feel a sense there is something alien about her.
