Overview: I can’t say too much about this work. It was sent to me by someone who wished to get me to translate it for them. When I quoted the cost, they balked. Eventually, I worked out a deal that I got to share it with the world as well as he.
There is a brief mention in it that it comes from the Yajudara-ryu. There seems to be no mention of this school in the normal sources I rely on.
The work is fascinating to me in that so much of what it says is similar to modern raid and patrol doctrine. The use of a patrol camp will be familiar to those that have been on long range patrols to set up a raid. At the same time, much of what it deals with is obviously from a very early time. If there wasn’t so many references to ‘kuden’ (to be transmitted only in person) and talk of using bow and arrows and such, I would almost expect it to be a very high quality modern field manual for elite soldiers.
Based on the language and such, it appears to be an Edo Period (17th to mid 19th century) work. I have edited the version here heavily. The essential meaning is intact, but I have dropped off a few sections on complicated items of constructing things. I have added text to fill in gaps. It is not a straight forward translation, but will serve as an example of an ancient text for people to mull over.
