Overview: “Hundreds of years ago, the first two Runed were born. Their names, Colton and Sky Rune. Two lovers. It is said that it was their love that brought about the runes. Maybe it was the first time they fought a shadow-bear on Earth before humans had become the dominant species. Their sole purpose was to rid the world of humans, and so Colton and Sky had decided to protect the vulnerable mortals.
“The very first Beryl appeared to Colton, and he knew what to do. He drew runes on his skin and Sky’s, making them stronger and more powerful. And they killed that shadow-bear. The first time any shadow-bear was killed. The magic their runes provided enabled them to do so. Yet, those who could not bear runes needed a way to kill these monsters. Colton and Sky had combined the four elements, creating the first Obelisk. A long sword seemingly made of stone, but the magic coursing through it is what kills the shadow-bears.
“As the years went on, they realized they were the only people who could manipulate the elements, so they created four more who could, too. Fire became Enzo Kindle. Air became Willa Strain. Water became Julian Loch. Earth became Rhea Clay. Even though they were each made of one element, they still had control over all four. Descendants of those four had become what we call Elementals, those who could manipulate the four elements. Descendants of Colton and Sky, however, became Runed. Not all of them, of course. Only one every 100 years, or when the last Runed passes.
“Colton and Sky created a book, called the Beryl Book. This holds all of the runes made by Colton and Sky. This book and the first Beryl(a pen made of pure emeralds) appear to Runed when they are born. Descendants of the Runes tend to be stronger when using their abilities, stronger than all other Elementals. But with the addition of runes, the Runed became the strongest Elemental of their time. They become as powerful as the first Runes.”
I smile at the two children in front of me. “That is why I have these silver ‘tattoos’, as you say Grayson. They are runes. I am this time’s Runed”.
