Genre: Fiction > Mystery/Thriller
1. Nailed
Ron Ketchum saw his share of the dark side of life as a cop in Los Angeles. Then he left L.A. to become the chief of police in the Sierra Nevada resort town of Goldstrike. One sunny morning in the mountains, though, he comes upon a crime unlike anything he’s ever seen before.
He finds the body of an African American man nailed to a tree.
The victim is a highly respected minister, and his father is the nationally known televangelist Jimmy Thunder. Ron, on the other hand, has described himself in court as a recovering bigot.
Goldstrike’s mayor for life and movie icon, Clay Steadman, wants Ron to catch the killer fast. Adding to the pressure, the victim’s grandmother comes to town. She tells the media mob that has descended on Goldstrike that God will curse the town until the killer is caught.
That’s when a rogue mountain lion begins attacking people. At first, the attacks happen on the wilderness outskirts of Goldstrike. Then the predator moves into town, leaping a fence into a family’s backyard. Finally, it turns the tables on one of the hunters sent out to bring it down.
Looking for a killer, hunting a lion and defending his own integrity — makes being a cop in L.A. seem like the good old days.
2. Defiled
Monday morning doesn’t start well for Ron Ketchum, chief of police of the Sierra Nevada resort town of Goldstrike, California. His deputy chief leaves town looking for a new job. A “dirty” bomb — C4 plastic explosive attached to a container of radioactive material — is found on Lake Adeline, the town’s crown jewel. Hale Tibbot, a rich, divisive real estate developer, is murdered and drained of half his blood.
Even for a cop with twenty years LAPD experience, that’s a handful. Ron reaches out to his old partner, Keely Powell for help. Then the feds arrive. First, it’s Special Agent John Tall Wolf of the BIA, Bureau of Indian Affairs. Next, to stir the pot further, the FBI sends in Special Agent Abra Benjamin, who tells Ron her goal is to “eat Tall Wolf’s lunch.”
Tracking down a terrorist, finding a killer and keeping everyone’s lines of responsibility straight would be challenge enough for any cop, but Ron has other worries, too. While sorting out the list of possible suspects for Tibbot’s murder, the chief realizes he has to include Goldstrike’s mayor and movie icon, Clay Steadman, and his own father, Walter Ketchum.
3. Impaled
Ron Ketchum gets a nighttime phone call from Clay Steadman, movie icon and the man who saved Ron’s career as a cop. Clay says he’s dying and wants to ask Ron for a favor or two before he goes.
Ron races through a Sierra Nevada blizzard to Clay’s house, but he’s too late. Clay is already dead. Someone has driven a wooden stake through Clay’s heart. Impaled him.
Things get even more macabre. Marlene Flower Moon, Clay’s production partner on his latest film, slips past a police guard and enters the murder scene. She sniffs the body, picking up the killer’s scent in the most literal way.
If that’s not enough, an earthquake hits, triggering a number of avalanches. Ron hopes Mother Nature has trapped the killer in Goldstrike, the mountain resort town where he’s now mayor.
Maybe she has. Because a screenwriter Clay talked to about collaborating with him on his final script soon turns up dead. So now there are two murder cases to solve.
